Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a title granted by UNESCO since 1985, the city houses the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos. The reputation is not only a religious issue, but alsoto save one of the greatest artistic heritage of Brazil, the splendidwork performed by master Antonio Francisco Lisboa, Aleijadinho. There are 12 prophets in soapstone, in the forecourtof the Basilica, and 66 figures in cedar in Steps of the Passion.
The mining activity is the basis of the local economy due to therich deposits of iron ore. The name Congonhas comes from aplant called ”Congonha” from the Tupi word ”Ko goi” which means ”that which sustains” or “that feeds”. The plant waswidely used to make a tea that, according to population, is beneficial for various kinds of illnesses.
Among the natural attractions of the city, Waterfall Clean Wateris a natural waterslide. In Horto, trails lead visitors to the top of ahill, where a gazebo was built. The Black Lagoon Waterreceives visitors in search of the light effect created by the lightsof the city.
