The story of Governador Valadares begins in the eighteenth century, with the adventurerswho arrived there in search of richness. When minerals began to run out, agriculture and cattle that maintained the region. The city was known by several names, changing its name Baguari district in 1882. In 1937 it was elevated to city and received the name of Governador Valadares, in honor of the intervenor in Minas Gerais, Benedict Valladares.

The main attraction of the destination is Ibituruna Peak with an altitude of 1,123 meters,seen still on the road. With significant fauna and flora, sharp rock formations, the peak is a conservation area where you can practice paragliding. Peak Ibituruna hosts one of the Brazilian Gliding Championship, and receive every year a large numb of tourists and fans of the sport in search of adventure. Because of Ibituruna, Governador Valadares became known as ”Gliding Platform of the World.” The place has also many waterfalls and rapids.

Among the cultural attractions are the Urban Architectural Collection, the ring to tiesolipeds, the Cathedral of St. Anthony, the Sugar Company, the Historical Museum ofGovernador Valadares, Theatre and Jesaja Monument to Gliding.
