The town of Piranguinho is famous for being the capital of Brazil’s pé-de-moleque (a typical Brazilian sweet) production. Piranguinho produces a great quantity of this sweet, which is consumed throughout Brazil’s national territory. The sweet has been produced by hand for over 80 years and is recognized as a piece of intangible cultural heritage of the State of Minas Gerais. It also ranks as an “anchor product” of the gastronomic identity of the Circuito Turístico Caminhos do Sul de Minas (Paths of Southern Minas Tourist Circuit, and is a typically unique delicacy that confers international fame upon the municipality. The “Festa do Maior Pé de Moleque do Mundo”(World’s Biggest Pé-de-Moleque sweet Party) brings together mineiro culture associated with the July festivals with the tradition of this sweet’s production. The festival gathers producers of this sweet with the aim of making a giant pé-de-moleque, which was recognized in 2010 by RankBrasil, the Brazilian record book.
