Named after a Tupi Indian word meaning a strong, brave man, the population of the Abaeté region began increasing around 1730, mostly as a result of mining and commerce activities. A diamond from Abaeté, of some 138 carats, made history in 1796 as the biggest precious stone that had been found until that time. The discovery of the diamond attracted many settlers who were looking for sesmarias (uncultivated land). Currently the region is an important nexus of dairy production, and forms part of the Three Marias Lake Circuit, which is popular with tourists. It is an interesting destination particularly for those who like nature and religious festivals.

Travelling tips: The traditional festival of San Antonio de Tabocas is celebrated on 13th June. July brings the Expô Abaeté and, in the second to last week of the month, the festival of Nossa Senhora do Rosário takes place.
