Cataguases is known as a city inspired by the modernist movement. It has several constructions credited to famous names, such as Oscar Niemeyer, Burle Marx, Cândido Portinari, Paulo Werneck, Jan Zach, Joaquim Tenreiro, Francisco Bologna and José Inácio Peixoto. Humberto Mauro, one of the pioneers of national cinema, filmed in the city for the movie Valadião. There is a rich variety of art and architecture here, as well as six cultural centres, five higher education establishments, two museums, and several cultural events that take place throughout the year.
