The discovery of gold inspired the name of this town, which was inaugurated in 1953 when it was separated from São João Nepomuceno. The city offers a number of natural attractions including the Maurício Dam; shaped by the Novo River, it boasts opportunities for fishing, boat trips and camping. The Fumaça Waterfall, with its breath-taking scenery and river beach, is also a worthwhile excursion. The Rosário Church, built by slaves in 1888, is one of the city’s main attractions. Highlights also include the festivals of São Sebastião, Mês de Maria, Sagrado Coração de Jesus (in June), the Descoberto Agriculture Exhibition (also in June), the Feras Caracol Tournament, and the Day of the Municipality, which takes place on 12th December.
