No one knows for certain when exactly João Pinheiro’s emerged but, based on documents that were found, it is believed the town came into existence at the end of the 18th century. It was initially named Santana dos Alegres due to an ox of the same name that would come to the area most nights and moo until morning, as if singing happily. In 1923 the name João Pinheiro was taken, in homage to the ex-governor of Minas Gerais.
