Morada Nova de Minas emerged from the diverse range of sesmarias (uncultivated or abandoned lands) that were ceded in the 18th century. Its name comes from one of its founders, Dona Inácia Maria do Rosário, who ordered the construction of a chapel in honour of Nossa Senhora de Loreto in 1800. She later constructed a sobrado (small home with raised floor and balcony) beside the chapel to live in, referring to it as her “Morada Nova” (new dwelling). Among the destination’s attractions are the Três Marias Lake, the Três Marias Hydroelectric Plant, the Matriz de Nossa Senhora de Loreto Church, the São José Chapel, and the Morada Nova de Minas Memorial. Travel Tips: The Três Marias Lake, with its clear, calm waters and temperatures of around 20 degrees is a great place for sport fishing and water sports.
