In the northwest region of Minas, Paracatu is considered to be one of the best-equipped municipalities in provincial Brazil. In 1820, José Bonifácio suggested that Brazil’s capital be placed here, with the name Brasília; which means that Paracatu could easily have become the nation’s capital. The city was first established in the 18th century, after indications of the presence of gold were found in the area. The mines’ abundance of precious deposits quickly attracted numerous adventurers from local areas and neighbouring states, at which time the village’s development took a great leap forward. Imposing constructions emerged, which today act as evidence of the city’s lucrative past.
