This municipality initially belonged to Mariana, before being transferred to Ponte Nova in 1890, and then passing to Dom Silvério in December 1962. The appointment of Voronoff Starling as mayor of the municipality occurred on 3rd March 1963. The region’s first elections took place on the 30th of June that year, with Diamantino Lobo Pereira elected as the first mayor of Rio Doce. The city forms part of the Serras de Minas tourist circuit.
