A city in the central region of the state, Três Marias developed thanks to the construction of a lake formed by the damming of the São Francisco River’s waters. The Três Marias Lake, dubbed “Doce Mar de Minas” (Sweet Sea of Minas) by local residents, is eight times bigger than the Guanabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro. Angling and water sports are two activities that particularly attract tourists to the region.
