The village of São Gonçalo do Rio Preto grew around a chapel until, in accordance with the Royal Charter of 1820, it was dedicated as a local parish. Located at the top of Jequitinhonha, some 56km from Diamantina, this small municipality is surrounded by beautiful landscapes. Visitors who travel to São Gonçalo do Rio Preto will find the perfect platform for eco-tourist activities. The municipality is home to the Rio Preto State Park, the main tourist attraction in the city, which boasts truly great facilities as well as a variety of waterfalls, trails and rock inscriptions. The Park is also home to a rich ecosystem and perfectly preserved examples of unique flora and fauna. Another great tourist attraction is the Lapeiro Beach; located 1km from the city centre, it has great facilities for sports such as beach soccer, beach volleyball and badminton, as well as bars and a restaurant offering visitors a good time.
