São João del Rei
This city’s unusual tradition lends itself to be known as “land where the bells speak”. The way the church bells ring tell locals where, when and for whom ceremonies will be held, whether or not there is a procession and, in the case of double-ringing bells during funerals, even whether the deceased person was male or female.

This city’s unusual tradition lends itself to be known as “land where the bells speak”. The way the church bells ring tell locals where, when and for whom ceremonies will be held, whether or not there is a procession and, in the case of double-ringing bells during funerals, even whether the deceased person was male or female. In addition to this rich tradition, the city also preserves its beautiful heritage and was home to important people in the history of Minas Gerais and wider Brazil, including Joaquim José da Silva Xavier (otherwise known as Tiradentes), Dona Bárbara Heliodora Guilhermina da Silveira, and Tancredo Neves.
Travel Tips: An almost obligatory experience for those visiting São João Del-Rei is the tour on the Maria Fumaça (steam train). The 35-minute tour is 12km long and offers an excellent view of the Serra de São José before terminating at Tiradentes station.
